Hi Ken,
If you want to use the 420EX as the only flash (e.g. in a bracket),
the Off-Camera Shoe cord 2 (OCSC2) would seem to make more sense.
The OCSC2 allows you to have full wired ETTL control of one flash.
I think you can also use a 550EX mounted on the OCSC2 to act as a
WETTL (wireless ETTL) master for a multiflash setup.
Besides, I think that the OCSC2 is a cheaper (around here) than
getting all the bits for a working TTL-distributor system. And if
you have a 550EX and 420EX, then WETTL makes the TTL-cord system
redundant, unlike with the OCSC2.
