Hi Pierre,
I went shopping, and ...
came home with a Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom and matching
EW 83 II hood. My intended use is mainly travel, but also for nature
scenics and nature closeups.
Here's MY rationalization. I hope it does not have to be logical) :-)
Common negative points
1) 5 bladed diaphragm. Pentagonal bokeh, ugghh...
2) Hood not included
3) Hey, I thought there were 20 million EF lenses ever made.
So, how come there are so few used EF 20 and EF 20-35's?
Did Canon make 18 million 28-80 IV (Photodo 2.2)?
EF 20-35mm
1) Zoom is more versatile (e.g. framing slides and when travelling)
2) Lighter (340g vs 405g)
3) Identical Photodo rating (3.4) as the 20mm prime lens
4) Photodo measured focal length 20-35mm (unlike some other lenses)
5) Cheaper
EF 20mm
1) Focuses closer (25cm vs 34cm)
2) 72mm filter mount
3) Less linear distortion (photodo -2.33% vs -4.55%)
The zooming aspect became relatively important, especially for
travelling in Europe with two young children.
I wanted to discuss just two issues: the close-focussing, and filter
mount diameter.
Close focussing is important, but the DOF calculator
http://www.photozone.de/depth.htm
reports the hyperfocal distance for a 20mm lens at f/16 is 1 meter.
Does this mean that "infinite DOF" scenics need to be composed so
that "everything" lies between 0.5m to infinity?
Does this mean that focussing closer blur distant objects?
Another reason for choosing the zoom is the ability to crop the
unwanted detail out of the picture. Details like my shoes, tripod
legs, camera bag, power lines, sun, etc :-)
The filter situation bothered me more. A good solution would be to
have drop-in rear filters, like the EF 17-35 L. Another method is
to forego filters altogether and buy a rangefinder with a Zeiss
16mm Hologon or 21mm Biogon or even a Voigtlnder 12mm or 15mm
Heliar. Those solutions are not in my current budget :-)
In order to use my existing 72mm filters, I could either buy the
EF 20mm or search for a used discontinued (non USM) EF 20-35 L in
good condition. (KEH has some battered ones on their website).
However, since I also have Cokin P filters (83 to 85mm in size), I was
equally happy to use the Cokin CPOL and Grad NDs. There are many reports
of vignetting with Cokin P and super-wide angle lenses in the archives.
Would it help to just hold the filters by hand in front of the lens?
Or use a rubber band to secure the Cokin P holder to the lens hood
bayonet mount?
Or even surgically modify a Cokin P holder, using WJM's idea of a hot
soldering iron :-)
Bring on the flames :-)
Cheers
Julian Loke
