I'm in favour of the first solution - refer to:

It's cheap, it's simple and it works. Apart from that
it significantly reduces the risk of burning off a
finger or two ;-).
Also think of the flare problems you'd have if you
managed to melt a hole through the plastic barrel of
your new lens :-( I'll bet they don't multi-coat
the EDGES of any EF lens elements!!
