This certainly wouldn't be the first time that Canon's English-language
documentation was less clear than one would like. I figured that pressing the
release button was only necessary for turning on the camera, but parts of the
manual *seem* to imply that you need to press it whenever turning the dial. I'm
not a mechanical engineer, but I am bright enough to recognize that the design
of the 7/30 is such that it just isn't always possible to do so, and I must
assume that Canon's engineers are at least as bright as I am. :-)
I do like the feel of the Elan 7's command dial (although I'm less enamored of
its quick control dial), and so far I've found the camera a pleasure to use. Two
days after it arrived I slapped in some b&w film and hiked up the local
mountain, which is currently under about three feet of snow and offered a stiff
wind above treeline. The 7 performed well for me right out of the box. Now if
someone would just buy my EOS 5 so I can pay for the 7. . . . ;-)
