I was thinking that too. Today I happened to find the current EF lens brochure
at my local camera shop (I've had only the "L" brochure), and while it shows
only the Mk. II version of the 28-105, the 20-35/3.5~4.5 remains unchanged, and
since the original 28-105 and the 20-35 share the same instruction sheet, and
the 20-35 is shown in the brochure as having FTM, I feel it is safe to assume
that my 28-105 also has FTM. I agree that FTM is of limited utility if you don't
shift AF activation away from the shutter button, and when I want to focus
manually I switch to MF mode, but I also often focus manually when I first start
to frame a shot, rather than activating the AF and metering (and causing
unnecessary battery drain), and since I usually don't switch to MF mode when
doing so, the wording of the instructions had me a bit concerned that I might be
damaging my lens. This doesn't seem to be the case, however.
