When in the full auto mode (or when all sensors are active in another mode) and
eye control turned off on the Elan 7, from what I gather from the manual, the
camera will choose the closest focus that is under an AF sensor.
Well, I find that mine doesn't always do this. It will pick the center sensor
some of the time when there is something there that the camera can focus on. It
doesn't always. Some of the time, it will pick the center spot even when one of
the other sensors land on something that clearly has enough contrast to properly
focus on.
I talked to Canon about this, and the tech was a little vague with his answer.
Basically, he told me that the Elan would pick the closest subject, and if it
didn't, it meant that there was no sensor there to pick it up. When I say he
was vague, I mean that in our 10 minute conversation, he wavered a bit on that
point. As I say above, mine doesn't quite do that reliably.
For an example, picture taking a shot of 2 people centered in the frame. With a
close background, there could be something at the center sensor that the AF can
focus on (assume enough space between the people that neither covers the center
sensor). My Elan will sometimes focus at the center point, which is obviously
farther away, and sometimes at one of the side sensors where you would expect it
to.
Has anyone else had this happen? Would you consider this normal behavior for
the AF system? Is it simply that as far as the camera is concerned, the
center spot is the only one that can achieve focus?
