It appears that your's works the same as mine.  Your guess at the center
cross-sensor having the best chance would be my bet also.  Nice to have some
confirmation that I wasn't going wacky, since the manual clearly states that the
7E will focus on the closest subject. (in that mode)

Canon would do well to put that sort of explanation in the manual.
(not about my being wacky, that goes without saying)

Of course, putting cross sensors at ALL the AF points would be nice also.  I
wonder how much more that would have cost them?  I can't think of any technical
reasons against it.

I'm still getting used to autofocus.  I set the AF start to the * button and
have been using the camera that way for a few days.  I find that works well for
me, and I like having the AE lock on the shutter.  After using a fully manual
SLR for 20 years, having all these choices is a little overwhelming at times.
Lost a few pictures to "experience" so far.  Love the camera, though.
