Hi Don,

The Area auto-AF on my Elan 7E is a bit mysterious.  It would seem
that it picks the easiest thing to focus on, and the centre cross-
sensor has the best chance of acquiring focus.

The alternatives seem to be:
1) Use the centre cross-sensor only
2) Use a well-calibrated ECF
3) Use the keypad to manually select the sensor

What do Elan 7 / EOS 33 / EOS 1v / EOS A2 users do?
