Only the 1VHS (high speed) has the power booster "built-in", it really is a
pre-packaged combo kit from Canon, it's no different with a 1V with a PB-E2,
it's a bit less expensive, but it means you have to use the PB-E2 at all
times, where if you bought the two items separately, it will allow you to
use 2CR5 battery with the original battery compartment/holder for a lighter
weight.

As for being useful, it provides higher frame rate and better AF speed in
the predicative AF mode, some people also feel the added weight/bulk of the
PB-E2 improves the balance of the camera/power booster combinaiton. I
haven't found the weight/bulk useful personally, but the added AF
improvement would be nice.

PB-E2 also has shutter switch on its' end, allowing "normal" holding when
the camera is rotated to the vertical protrait mode. Again personally I'd
rather hold the camera grip regardless whether in landscape or protrait
mode.

Regards,

Ken
