With VG-10 in EOS 5/A2/A2E and with PB-E2 in EOS 3/1x the tripod
hole remains centered. I'd guess that's true for all battery
packs for EOS 1x series.

Does anyone know what's the situation with D30?

One solution to the problem would be Really Right Stuff -type
quick release plate: for at least some cameras with non-centered
tripod holes they have plates that not only are centered when
connected to the non-centered hole but also have a hole in
themselves that's centered, just in case you need to use
a tripod without compatible QR system. I don't know if they
have one that'd fit the BP-300, though.
