Why don't you just set in M-mode time to 1/30 and aperature to f/8, the
flash will take care of your problem of handholdability. The flash is the
main light and noone moves faster then the 1/1000 (or faster) the flash
lights the subjects.:-) This way you have frozen the people and even have
some background.
You can also go down to 1/15 or slower, but then you should set your flash
to second-curtain to avaid gosthing. This technic you can also use in
Av-mode, but then you should be aware what slowest time you can expect in
the lowest lighting, and that this isn't to slow.
And when you go outside, just switch to Av-mode and proceed...
The EOS 5 you can set CF9 to set the time to 1/200 (max-sync) in Av-mode.
This will mean in low-light situations that the background becomes
underexposed.
> But the exposure time would never exceed the limit, e.g. 1/focal length.
This is exactly what P-mode does. So every EOS-body has it, and we al know
the results it's given us.
