But if you look at the subject line, the discussion
was about AV mode and flash.  Since several other
messages have raised questions about this, let me try
to address them here:

There's absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between AV mode with
a CF to lock the shutter at (say) 1/125th, and manual
mode with the same aperture and shutter speed
selected.  NO DIFFERENCE.  You're going to get the
aperture value you select, and a fixed shutter speed,
no matter how the light changes.

Again, we were talking AV mode and a fixed shutter
speed, with flash.  As soon as you turn on the flash,
the flash metering system controls exposure of the
subject, regardless of metering mode.  In AV mode
without a fixed shutter speed, the camera will vary
the shutter speed to properly expose the background,
but that's just what the original questioner wanted to
avoid.

So, if you want to choose the aperture, and want to
make sure the shutter speed is handholdable, you can
either set a CF (on the EOS 5), or use manual mode on
any other EOS.  Your results will be the same.
