Hi,

I'm not even certain that having the camera and lens hanging from your 
shoulder is safe, at least on a lighter body such as my Elan 7E. I'm afraid 
it could deform the camera around the lens mount, which would not be good 
for sharp focus. The EOS 3 is probably made stronger.

I have the 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS Lens and I'm always careful not to have the 
camera hold it.

I put the camera strap around my neck, but I hold the camera/lens assembly 
in my arms, or I carry it in my Lowepro Pro Mag bag, where the lens rests 
on the bottom of the bag with the camera above.

When changing settings, I try to hold the lens from under the barrel with 
one hand.

Heavy lens, but when I look at the pictures it gives me, I'm happy.
