And the funny thing is that you can't know if it really is so in
real life. As is said on this list the maximum apertures are often
(or at least sometimes) optimistic, and I *believe* this is more
true with cheaper lenses.

So we don't know for sure if Canon f1.8 lens is ment to be 1/2 or
2/3 stops slower than f1.4 because the same f1.8 is used in both
scales (by Canon).
Also I (we?) don't know if 50/1.4 really is that fast or maybe 1/3
or 1/4 stops slower which changes the situation once more...
And if you find out by measuring that the difference between 50/1.8
and 50/1.4 full open is 2/3 stops you could find that there may be
even bigger than 1/3 stop difference between lenses when set at f2.8,
f5.6 or so.

Anyway, because the difference is so small we get better sleep
if we just forget it...
