Hi Tom,
It would be easy enough to assume the small lamp on the body would be an
AF-assist light, especially since earlier models do have an AF-assist lamp in
that position (like the EOS 5 I had). But yes, on the 7/30 the flash itself is
the AF-assist lamp, and the flash tube flickers. This is why you can simply not
use AF assist when in the Creative Zone, by not raising the flash. You can also
turn off AF assist altogether, for the Creative Zone, so that the flash doesn't
fire for AF assist when it is popped up. In the Basic Zone, you can't disable
the AF assist altogether, which is what some folks have been complaining about.
BTW, if you use a 550EX flash on the 7 (and presumably a 420EX as well), the red
lamp on the flash functions as the AF-assist light, not the flash tube
itself--assuming you have AF assist enabled on the body.
Can you turn off AF assist on the IX? I suspect making the flash the AF-assist
lamp on the 7 made it easier to allow the user to turn it on or off as they
chose. I kind of like it that way--on my 5 I noticed that the red AF-assist lamp
fired even when it wasn't necessary, and it (the lamp) was certainly bright
enough for me to see it through the viewfinder.
