That is due to interface imitations. Probably also a 
result of the Kodak contract that lready crippled the AF.

No, the drives rotational speed is the same in D30 and D1.
The D1 is simply known to be less than compatible for
the MicroDrive.

Indeed. I use an external Datafab firewire reader to transfer
my images, and you suddenly notice how fast the drive can be.
The limitation is the camera.

With all the beatings in mind that my microdrive has taken, 
this sounds like either the MicroDrive has been used in a Nikon
D1 flavor of camera or that it is a foul excuse for accidentally 
formatting the card.
