In Canon and Casio cameras - yes. Nikon is known to have 
extensive compatibility problems that result in very high 
failure rates.

Nope. Mine has well over 7000 clicks in one year now,
two friends have almost twice as much on the clock.
No failure, not even a songle hickup. Mine has taken
quite some beating as well, most of them in operation.

The hardest impact was while writing away a series of 
shots. The impact ruptured the steel mirror casing.
(750 USD to fix it), but left the microdrive absolutely 
unimpressed.

IBM warns though of operation in high altitudes
(read: low athmospheric pressure) because the drives 
rely on an air cushion to keep the heads afloat.

So, I keep around 250 MB on several flash cards as a backup.
Never use it too much, though....
