I knew that the D30 accesses the microdrive at approx. 70%
the speed of a D1 (700 kb/s vs. 1000 kb/s),  but I didn't
know that access to flash cards is slower as well.  Perhaps
that's why the D30 has less of a problem with heat generated
from the microdrive!?

Yes.  I,  too,  prefer the convenience of 1gb in a single
unit.  I'm not going to step down to 128mb or even 512mb.
When I got my D30,  first thing I did was sell that puny
16mb card that came with it.  Got a whopping $20 for it
back then - in April :-)
