I use the 400 for sports and wildlife and am glad I bought it (using film).
I'll be making the switch to digital, where a 1.3-1.5 factor exists.  Then,
I may wish I had bought the 300 for sports.  520 to 600 will sometimes be
too much.  For wildlife, however, I'll still use the digital camera, the
400, and a 2x converter!

Buy the 400 if they're the same price.  Then later sell the 400, buy a used
300 and a 70-200L with the $$.
