Hi Gerry,

The 3437 = 460Mg head has a rated load capacity of 3kg, which should be
adequate to hold the EF 100-400.  I have a 3025 = 056 head which has the
same load rating, and it has no problem. In fact it is probably sturdier
than my higher-rated ball head 3413QR = 308RC.

Are you using the tripod mount ring on the lens?

Have you tried to reverse the QR plate, so that the weight of the lens and
the camera tends to TIGHTEN rather than loosen the head.

Alternative heads?
How about a 3160 = 200 fluid video head (which also takes 200PL plates)?
Or even a 3421 = 393 bucket-handle long lens bracket?

I have to admit that the 393 does make the 100-400 look very impressive :-)
