So, if I'm reading this stuff correctly, these new G-type lenses are totally
incompatible with any but Nikon's newest bodies (F100, N80, etc.)? Isn't that a bit
of a step (leap? vault? lunge?) backwards? And everyone gives Canon a hard time for
switching from the FD to the EF lens mount...;-)

I was under the impression that the vaunted compatibility of Nikon cameras with all
Nikon lenses was overstated. E.g., some new lenses won't (fully) work on older bodies
and some old lenses won't work on new bodies. Or they will mount, but they won't
meter (non-CPU lenses). Say what you will about Canon completely abandoning their MF
lens, but every Canon EOS camera has full functionality with every Canon EF lens.
