"Speedotron brownline".  That sounds like a flash unit.  Could you have a flash sync 
problem?  Normally the camera should sync with an electronic flash at 1/125 S or 
slower, but there may be more of a delay with this unit.  I would try a much slower 
shutter speed to see what happens.  IIRC, with a Canon flash, the camera won't let you 
set a faster speed, but that may be possible
with a third party flash.
