Hi Jim,
To answer your question, about a HUNDRED ZILLION images or so, are you
kidding? Don't they have magazine racks where you live? 8^) Virtually
every long sports shot published if shot on an EOS camera, was shot at f/2.8
or WFO on an EF 600 4L. This is why these lenses are being made and sold in
droves and you can't get one cheap! Look closely at any published
fashionable magazine ad today (OK, A.D., Beverly Hills Magazine and a few
other old dog 'zines not withstanding), many are currently being shot
wide-open, shallow DOF is the rage in advertising photography. Look at any
of the Lifestyle magazines, if they aren't digital images they are shot on
35mm film with fisheyes, 14's, 20's, hey even 50's and lots of long glass
300-400mm for fashion or portraits and almost all WFO 2.8 or faster. Set up
studio shots are few and far between these days (it's cheaper), and there is
MUCH less conventional studio skill involved even on the street, course and
gritty are in fashion and I don't see it going away anytime soon.
Cheers/Chip
