Hi Chip!

What I meant is, for my main shooting, landscapes, cities and the like, f/2.8
is just not needed. For the occasional portrait I use the 85/1.8 and 200/2.8
and sometimes the 28-70L or the 35 and 50mm primes. I think the 80-200 f/2.8L
is not well suited for portraits, mainly because of the long minimum focus
distance. You don't get a head shot at the wide end. Also the bokeh of the 200mm
prime wide open is simply beautiful, the 80-200 is worse, although not really bad.
The 70-200 f/2.8L is likely better in these respects (at least focus distance).

OTOH, the 80-200 still does get quite a bit of use for racing pictures. I do
that quite a lot lately. If you have access to the infield of the track, the
80-200 covers it all, IMHO. Here the f/2.8 also comes in handy for occasional
use with a TC. Unfortunately, the old 80-200 doesn't take the Canon TCs.
Therefor, I'm thinking hard to exchange it for a 70-200/2.8 or even the new
IS version. Also, the 100-400L IS looks like an alternative. Chip, I know you
do a lot of racing pictures, what do you think would be the better lens for
the job? But, OTOH, those lenses are not exactly cheap and as long as I can
get away with what I have, I hesitate to spend that money. After all, it's
just a hobby for me, although I have opportunities to get some money for my
pictures. I've never done it yet, I think the pressure might take the fun out
of it for me. If you HAVE to go there, you HAVE to deliver good pics it's
another story and starting to be real work indstead of plain fun. As it is now,
they get some pics. If the pics are good they're lucky, if not, they don't lose
anything. In return, I have fun and am offered to be driven around the track
as a passenger. Maybe I'll even have the opportunity to drive a Formula 3 car
around the track myself. I won't change that fun for hard work. ;-)
