As a pro user, I upgrapded to the IS model straight away. I don't know about technicalities of optical sharpness, but with image stabilizer on, you are guaranteed a sharper picture at all shutter speeds. Is also means you can use smaller apertures and slower film, which also provide for better sharpness.
