Alex, I have had no trouble with IS on either my 300/2.8 or the 70-200/2.8.
I suspect the system in these lenses is more reliable than the older 28-135
which sounds somewhat more "clunky" and seems to have failed on a few
lenses. The newer lenses enable IS mode 1 on the tripod and also offer mode
2 for panned shots, neither of which is available on the 28-135. Not that
I'm knocking the older lens as I own one and find it terrific for some
applications.
Unfortunately the exchange of US - Australian $ has worked against me for
the last few years so I have bought all my gear here in Oz. Hopefully this
will change for the better and I will start bothering Henry's team for good
deals on equipment. I really want a Kirk (or similar) ballhead and set of
camera/lens QR plates which I can't get here for love or money. I'm also up
for a 1Ds which is likely to cost a bit over $15,000 here. I might keep an
eye out for any assignments that involve a trip to mainland US.....

Regards, Tim
