Hi,
I've had the EF 85 f1.8 for several years - it's quite an old design lens but
it's sharp and works well.  Recently I bought the latest EF 100 f2.8 macro USM
and was surprised to note that the AF (over typical portrait ranges only) was
noticeably quicker.  I use an EOS3 which may be a factor.  I'd suggest you try
the 100 macro USM as part of your research - you might find that you don't need
the f2 of the EF 100 f2!
