Recently I bought the latest EF 100 f2.8 macro USM and was surprised to note that the AF (over typical portrait ranges only) was noticeably quicker. I use an EOS3 which may be a factor. I'd suggest you try the 100 macro USM as part of your research - you might find that you don't need the f2 of the EF 100 f2!
