Subject: EOS 85mm 1.8 vs 100mm 2.0

Greetz, Folks,
Ne1 know the advantages or disadvantages of choosing the 85mm 1.8 or
the 100m 2.0 other than price. I would like to purchase one or the
other today to use as a portrait lens, mostly for persons of color, with
Negroid features. I am trying to build a small portable studio and this
is an important choice for me although I haven't any experience with
either lens. Your advice and or insight is gratefully appreciated, TIA,
peace.

Hi,

I have used and owned both of these great lenses! They are both very sharp
and can both blow out the background very nicely for full/partial body and
head shots. The thing about the EF 100 2USM is if you want to shoot head
and shoulders you need to back up quit a bit more than with the EF 85
1.8USM. This is one of the reasons I kept the EF 85 1.8USM. It also offers
more flexibility when shooting in confined spaces yet still can give you the
perspective of a short tele.

Many will say that you can use one of the 50's in this situation but a 50mm
when used close enough for head shot will emphasize facial features that may
not be very flattering. This is why 85mm is the standard minimum focal
length for a portrait lens.

It may sound nuts but in my lens quiver I have both an EF 85 1.8USM and EF
135 2L (among several others), for portrait use. The EF 135 2L is a
fantastic head lens and the EF 85 1.8USM gives me the head and shoulder and
partial body images I need!

Cheers/Chip
