Tim,

I think the real lesson to be learned, here, is that we each, individually,
settle down to our own way of working/metering/compensating etc.

With the white car you knew, from experience, about how much compensation to
use, even with the camera set to evaluative pattern.

I've been raised, photographically, using a separate meter, but IME this
requires no less user interpretation than one built into a camera.

PS: backlit portraits tend to look most natural when the subject is slightly
underexposed from a "regular" incident reading. This is why Weston designed
their invercone to include a small amount of backlight. Am I really this
old?!!!!
