Just wondering, why Canon (or any 3rd party) hasn't
made a wide-angle converter for smaller-than-film
digital bodies?

You *can* buy wide angle (0.8x; 0.7x) converters that you stick on the front of your camera. You may need a step-up or step-down ring as they only come in a few sizes.

Reasons why they aren't built into the body:

* Where are you going to put it? There's no space in between the lens, lens mount, mirror, and body to fit a thing like that.

* Most pros would reject any extraneous glass in the camera. They'd rather just move down from their 50mm to 35mm glass and compensate that way.

* Most consumers would not be happy with the $50-100 additional cost this would represent.
