First:
AFAIK Japan has a similar export-sponsoring system as Australia for
example....that way export is always cheaper, or at least it can be,
depending on local taxes, import & VAT.
That said it baffles me that the UK-industry hasn't been wiped out by
mail-order resellers from the rest of Europe, Germany in specific.
It's not just Canon, *all* brands are more expensive in the UK, and
mail-order in the rest of the EU is a perfect way to get around that.
(though German companies might be less inclined to sell to/deal with
English speaking customers than Dutch companies for example)
