Indeed.

The only lens I've outright broken by dropping was an EF 35-350. It survived a
trip to Burning Man and back, but as I was unpacking the truck, I lifted my
camera bag out upside down, and as I had forgotten to zip up the lens pocket,
it slipped out and dropped about 4 feet onto the cement sidewalk. It landed on
the mount and shattered the cap, but other than that didn't appear to be
damaged. But, it turned out to no longer focus properly at the far end. I
lived without it for the better part of a year thinking it would be very
expensive to repair (never having had a lens repaired before). But finally I
sent it off to Horizon Electronics, who repaired it for $325, not as bad as I
expected (given how expensive the lens was). They told me that a gear had been
damaged.
