I think I can give you an opinion based in my experience. I own a 1Ds and
use it with my 14mm and 16-35mm. I've shooted many, many pictures with this
equipment and I can say:

1. Color fringing do exist
2. It does not appear systematically but only in some circumstances; mainly
when the picture borders are much contrasted.
3. It's possible, and frankly pleasant, to use extreme wides with full
format digital cameras but you need to be prepared to the fact that "some"
pictures may get out not perfect. An extremely small percentage.

By the way this phenomenon is too present in a lesser grade with film
cameras. In the digital arena it will produce new lenses, so called
telecentric, that will be launched in the future and in which the light
attack the sensor with a smaller angle. Meanwhile I will follow using my
extreme wides with my 1Ds. So, you can understand now how this matter is not
frequently commented in the web.

I've noted much more the color fringing and the distortion with my 1Ds and a
Nikkor 28 PC with a N/C converter, Canon has not this usefull focal in tilt
lenses, where if, decentring, I go beyond the established limits in either
sense the fringing and the distortion is huge. I hope this can help. Please
excuse my language dullness!

Kind regards

Felix
