The German ColorFoto mentioned that some camera's can/could do this 
pixel-shadowing correction (see other posting) in-camera, but it 
would require longer data-aquisition times.
And even though CF didn't say it: this also requires a lens-depending 
set of correction-parameters....aftermarket lens manufacturers 
probably won't like this at all....8-))

Another interesting factor: reflection from the sensor, back to the 
rear element of the lens, back to the sensor....degrading contrast.
Hence improved anti-reflection coating on the rear of some lenses (it 
depends on the shape and distance of the rear lens element whether 
the problem is significant it seems).
