I have both the 85mm f/1.2L (US$1400 new at B&H) and the 85mm f/1.8 ($330 new at B&H). The more expensive L lens is a little slow to focus in some low-light situations. Nothing to worry about the great majority of the time in my experience, but I guess it depends what kind of shooting you do. Meanwhile, the f/1.8 is an excellent lens at a bargain price. Doesn't cost much more than a focusing screen :-). ------------------------- Ken, I currently use a EF 100MM F2 USM. I do normally use this lens as a standard lens on one body, I would probably do the same with an 85mm, so speed is important. I wanted something a little faster, but at this point I am not sure I want to spend that much for a portrait lens... half that, sure. But $1400 or more? Not so sure. I truly believe Canon needs to wake up and make an intermediary lens, a little faster, maybe in the $600-800 range.
