I have a Canon 85/1.8. It's got a really nice manual focus feel to it.
And I seriously doubt you'd know any difference in sharpness from the
Contax. I do not know why you'd crave sharpness for portraits in any
case.

You can get a nice used one for a couple of hundred bucks.
No adaptor needed.

If all you want is a lens that says Contax on the front, maybe you're
in the wrong email group.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Nah. Have some lenses with Contax on the front, four primes actually, all G
series. The 85 f1.8 doesn't really gain me anything. It needs to be just a
tad faster, that's the problem. I am attempting to find something for a
slightly tighter isolation. Currently I use a 100 F2 on an Elan 7E, a CZ 90
F2.8 on a Contax G1 and I have a EOS 3 sitting wanting a portrait lens...
instead I end up running 75mm on a Zoom at F2.8 and that does not get me a
good enough isolation for my preferred type of shooting. I strongly prefer
to have all my cameras going when doing a shoot. This is currently not
working out. I need another lens, and the 85 F1.8 does not work out well
for it. To much overlap in capability.

Well, I will have to wait and see what I will end up getting, but every
brand makes something very nice, so I would not take offense at other brands
being discussed. Hell, I would love a Minolta Smooth Transition lens. And
the color, contrast and sharpness of my CZ 90 f2.8 is awesome... and the
color and contrast are what I look for in a portrait lens, speed can soften
the image. The photos from my 100 F2 have a completely different character.
Odd as it may seem, some people come out better in one than the other. For
example, take two of my nieces. My niece Sabrina (16) comes out like she
was born for CZ. My niece Melissa (17) comes out like she paid off Canon.
Then again my fiance hides from my SLR's... and just gets to threaten after
the fact about my rangefinder. And yes, I have lots of nieces (9, 4yoa - 31
yoa), in case anyone wondered :)

I would like to find another lens with some definite character, different
from my current arsenal. The 85 F1.8 is nearly an identical lens to the 100
F2, and seems to take similar photos. Does anyone know if the Canon 135 F2,
85 F1.2 or Contax F1.4 have different feel on the photos from my other two
portrait lenses?

Thanks all!

Robert Meyers

Rob,

Have you tried the 90 TSE?
