Love those architectural model shots! I contemplated going into the business of building those at one point and did half a dozen jobs, but competition is stiff, most work is in-house, and now with CG work is getting somewhat scarcer, so I gave it up as taking too much time from my real career. Still love beautiful models though. Those are really well done.

Yeah, some of those models are fantastic. I've taken pictures of some that cost well over $100,000. Most municipalities, ours included, require them for major projects. They more typically cost $10K to $20K for a high rise tower.

If possible I take them outside, mount them on my 509 Gitzo, tilt and turn them to get the sun angles correct and then shoot them; mostly with MF or 4x5, sometimes with 35 (the old 35TS or current 24TSE).

I always ask if the elements are fastened firmly to the base, as the tilting as well as general moving can dislodge elements. A couple of times I've been told everything is solid but major elements fell off and broke. They don't fall to the floor as there is usually a transparent cover on them, but they can be quite fragile. One time it took 2 weeks and $12K to repair a model that had to be tilted to get it through a doorway and it came apart.

In my other job as an architect I've commissioned quite a few, but try not to get fancier than the project requires, but sometimes the developer's ego takes over and he demands 'the best'. That sort of thing can get out of hand.
