I recently decided to buy 2 Sigma EF500 DG Super flashes to build a very
portable
wireless studio setup to go with my 550EX. Unfortunately it looks as if I
might have been caught by the poor Sigma quality control again :-(
First the horror stories:
When I pulled the little diffuser panel out of the one flash, it was stuck -
pulling it out it broke right out of its tracks!
Using a borrowed 10d, I set up the 2 Sigmas as slaves with the 550 as master
on the camera pointing directly at the subject. I found that one of the
Sigmas consistently underexposes on ETTL. Testing it with a Sekonic flash
meter, it seems to underexpose by as much as 3 stops! (I used second curtain
slow shutter to miss the preflash) The main flash is about the same output
as the preflash! Looks like I'll have no choice but to use the setup on
manual only :-(
Now some questions:
1. Has anybody used a similar setup on film or digital? (One 550EX master
and 2 Sigma 500DG's as slaves on ETTL)
2. Is the Sigma 500DG even compatible with the 10d?
3. Any suggestions what other settings to try to solve the underxeposure on
one of the Sigmas before I send it back for repair. (I have already checked
that the ISO is set correctly)
4. I have always thought that the Canon wireless ETTL is via some infrared
communication, but it seems as if it happens by the main flash only! When I
switch the master (550EX) main flash off (it only pre-flashes), the slave
flashes (Sigmas) does not fire at all. This means that my master on camera
must allways fire. Is this supposed to work that way?
