Are all these events indoors? One thing to check are the custom functions. Make sure auto fill flash reduction is disabled. While you would not think this would impact the flash that is one area I would check. If you are in manual and use a L508 meter, retract the dome to compensate for contrast. This is something many users of this meter do with digital since underexposure is better than overexposing a digital image. The other thing is to try a different flash, perhaps one that is not dedicated and see if you have the same result.

Thanks for the reply Peter, yes the event was indoors and I have also used a Quantum Q T-2 in both manual and auto modes. Also auto fill flash is Disabled. I just set up a test shot and used the meter and the shot came out ok. Basically I seem to be haveing difficulty in getting consistency using flash. Setting flash and camera for 1/60 f8 does not always give me the correct exposure sometimes the picture is good sometimes too dark. It appears that the lighter.darker subject is it changes the exposure but why does this happen when everything is in manual mode? I never had this problem with film, perhaps the lab made the corrections and I just never knew it.
