You have exposed the dress, the important subject correctly, but you need more light in the rest of the scene. It sounds like you need another flash bounced, or on the background. You're expecting too much from one on camera flash :-) You could go with a larger aperture or slower shutter speed to get more ambient light, but only if there is some ambient light. If it's real dark back there that won't help.
