I start on M, 1/200, f8, ISO100 and see what I get (digital E-TTL).  If
the roof is white and low, I bounce, otherside I go straight on.  If I'm
in conditions of random shooting (like parties) I use ISO 400.

Often I can get away with a 20mm lens, f/2.8, ISO 400 or 800, and a
steady hand to skip the flash completely if that would annoy people
less.
