That's sounds fair. I also wonder how do you mention shooting indoors
in Av with EOS ? Av will always expose for the ambient (not sure about
P-mode - never use one), so in these cases, indoors, when flash acts as
your main light, the only way to control it is switching to M (manual)
mode, set the desired aperture, shutter speed from the movement/shake
considerations (or willing to catch at least a bit of background) and
shoot.
TTL (or E-TTL) will take care of proper subject's exposure by flash,
while the shutter speed you set will take care of rendering movement,
avoiding shake and/or background/ambient lighting.
Av with flash is only possible in daylight shooting (flash acts as
fill-in) or in any case when Av produces bearable exposure (say, over
1/45-1/60 at given aperture).
Indoors, I always shoot in M as described above, while at daylight,
when fill-in is only needed I switch to Av.
