Unfortunately I've got a 300D and a 420EX, so I don't even get FEC. The bulk of my flash work is often with a pair of 800ws strobes, and I do those in M mode and use the histogram to determine proper exposure. I often don't even need the histogram since I can just set the lights up and set the power to where it is probably right, and I usually am. Small white rooms filled with partying people and an incandescant bulb or two do great at f/8 1/200 with the 420ex in M-mode, but other situations don't. The 420ex would be completly useless with a film camera because it has no controls and seems to be pretty random in how it and the rebel interact to light things up.
