Also, using an extension tube incurs some light loss, whereas a diopter doesn't. I think there's probably a comparable loss of DOF. Depending on the length of the extension and lens combo, it can be more awkward to handle.

If you use an extension tube on a zoom lens, then zooming will change
focus and the subject-to-lens distance.

If you use a diopter (500D) on a zoom lens, zooming will (mostly) retain
focus and will change magnification.
