Hello list,
I hope this isn't a bit out of topic since most of you are probably
professionals
and I'm a simple amateur photographer with an EOS 300D, anyhow
please let me know if I'm OOT, thank you! :)
Currently I own 2 lens: the Canon EF 18-55mm which came with EOS
300D (which
I don't like it very much, it seems to fragile, specially the
focusing ring) and a Sigma 55-200mm DC that I think has an excellent
price/quality
relation (I bought it new, almost an year ago, for 170euros. I guess it
was a good bargain).
I'm thinking in buying a "all in one" lens, something like 28-135mm
so I hadn't
to be all the time switching between lens! Although I didn't want to
spend much
money (Ok I know they don't come cheap but I've seen a really big
price range), I know canon has one, but it's with USM so probably
it's very expensive for someone that only does photography has an
hobbie.
My question is, should I really go for the canon one? Or should I
try to go for
the Sigma 28-135mm (they also have one, and my 55-200mm didn't let
me down), or
any other brand? (I'm don't know many others...I've seen Tokina lens
but don't know if they are good or not)
Also, do you think it's a bad choice I'm doing? Should I stick with
the 2 lens
I have?
All comments are appreciated.
Thank you for your time, and sorry if my english isn't the best!
I am thinking that the Canon 28-135 you are considering is the IS
lens The IS means that the lens has the Image Stabilization feature
which is a nice feature to have since it allows longer hand held
exposures. As far as I know, the Sigma does not have this feature.
So you are really not comparing equal lenses.
I think the IS is worth the extra money. That is the lens I put on
my EOS-3 or 20D when I want to carry one lens.

Hi
Normally I would also agree with 28-135 IS option (it's a very good
lens). Did you know that Canon just announced a 24-105 f4 L lens with
IS? The new lens is one of the 'L' series (Canons Pro lens series) and
should be much better than the 28-135 (plus it's f4 instead of f5.6 at
the tele end).
Rob
Yeah, I saw that...... But being first, an 'L', and second, 'new', it
may be out of Pablo's reach financially..
I'm going to keep an eye on this lens. with the 24 end, and IS, maybe
it can replace my 28-70 L
Bob
I'm thinking it might replace my 24-70L. My next lens up is a 100-400L and I'm
finding the gap between 70-100 a bit of a nuisance.
I checked on pricing for the 24-105 and Canon suggested list price in Canada is
about $2000. I think the 28-135 normally sells for around $700 or so.
