Thanks for the response, Felix and Cotty (and anyone else who has responded since. I receive the list in digest form).

Felix, I've long respected your posts on the Nikon lists. When folks there who have never shot a full frame digital camera criticize it based on hearsay, but you as an actual user note it truly does deliver superior quality, it's your words I pay attention to most.

And it's some of your words in response to my post which lead to the first question I wanted to ask.

If I get a 5D, I'll start with a zoom lens or two. Maybe the new 24-105 f/4 (pending reviews) will be one. Or maybe Tamron's 28-75 f/2.8 di, which I use on my film bodies (and which, as Henning has noted repeatedly on this list, is optically outstanding).

But with my film bodies I often like to shoot fast primes. Especially when I travel, I may take just a 24 f/2, a 50 f/1.2 and an 85 f/1.4, and find they meet my needs just fine. The EF equivalents would be the 24 f/1.4, the 50 f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.2. Has anyone used any of those lenses on a full frame digital body?

In particular, the following in Felix's response raised a bit of a red flag to me:

Just bear in mind that a full frame digital reflex does not forgive any imperfection of the lens and particularly, in the wides and extreme wides. Not they are bad that they aren't but be prepared for shooting two or three stops close as otherwise corners will be a little bit soft.

Obviously, shooting a few stops down on an f/1.4 lens defeats the purpose of having an f/1.4 lens (and as a photographer who likes to shoot available light and likes wide angles, the 24 f/1.4 is a lens I've coveted for years). In general, as a wide angle lens designed for film which pushes the aperture boundaries, I'm concerned about blurred edges and color fringing when used on a digital body.

I'd have similar concerns with the 85 f/1.2, another lens clearly pushing the aperture limits. I don't mind investing in these lenses. But I'd hate to buy them then find out they're just not that good on a full frame digital body.

Has anyone shot the 24 f/1.4, 50 f/1.4 and/or 85 f/1.2 on a 1Ds or 1Ds II? If so, how did the photos turn out?

Larry
