Hi Ken, The 75-300 IS and their ilk are a completely different beast. I can understand why you were unhappy with that lens. There are only two models of EF 70-300 lenses. I was referring to the cheaper, faster one. The other one is the more expensive, smaller, but heavier EF 70-300 DO IS. You might be pleasantly surprised at the new lens. Sharpness and handling are on par with the EF 28-135. Much lighter than the 100-400 IS USM, and with a better Image Stabilizer.
