I tend to think that the advantages of fast glass are diminished in
wider-angle applications. To me, they are not worth the added expense
and size. I like faster lenses in the longer lengths where I will be
blurring backgrounds.

Actually in my application (wedding photography) I find that my 24-105
f4 L IS is not fast enough in the sense that it doesn't blur the
backgrounds as nicely as my 85 1.8 or 70-200f2.8 L IS. So for that
reason I would have liked the 24-70 f2.8 L ... But I do like the IS of
my 24-105 and I permanenly leave this lense on my 5D. I then just
switch between the 85 and 70-200 on my 1D MkII and I never have dust
probs in my 5D. If you need to focus closer then get a set of
diopters... I got some no name ones which I stick on my 85 1.8 for
macros of rings etc... And they're fantastic.
So I'd prefer the 2.8 in the wide angles... But I do like the 24-105
range... So it's a compromise I live with.
That's an interesting comment, because I'm thinking about getting the 24-105
f4L to at least augment, if not replace, my 24-70 f2.8L. It doesn't quite
have the reach to get this shot:

(Shot with the 24-70, but on a 20D, instead of the 5D we use now)
I normally shoot from a position hidden behind the best man, and get that
ring exchange shot. The 24-70 worked on the 20D, the 28-135 IS works on the
5D, but the 24-70 is too short to get in on the 5D...
The only problem with the 70-200 f2.8L IS (which we also have) is that I
feel extremely conspicuous in front of the congregation with that monster on
the camera. Not exactly low profile...
