All of a sudden my Speadlite 550EX is leaking some kind of transparant fluid
from the hinge. After wiping it off and flipping the flash head from
horizontal to vertical and back again, there was new fluid on the rotation shaft. This happened to me several times in the time that I noted and tested
it.

Flashes use electrolytic capacitors to store the high voltage charge. These have a fluid inside, and when they fail they will often bulge and leak fluid. It's a caustic fluid with a sharp smell. If it's this, the insides are probably corroded beyond reasonable chance of repair.

I've never run across an LCD actually leaking fluid, but if it is this the chance of a repair is good.

Get it to a smart service facility as soon as you can.

        Cheers, Warren Marts
