I would recommend manual mode also to pull in the background as the flash will still be automatic. You should test this to become comfortable with this. This is good advice. If your speed drops down to 1/8th or lower, then you can sometimes get red highlights around the subject from motion. About the only new advice I would recommend is to get Lithium Ion AA batteries for the flash. They last a lot longer. These are Not rechargeable ones. Energizer Lithium.
